
A junction, not just a stop
Heading north out of Peterborough, the East Coast Main Line runs straight and fast across the Fens. Then, at mile 105 from King's Cross, the train slows for Grantham — and the geography shifts. To the west, the A1 slides into view, threading the same vale it has followed since Roman engineers laid its predecessor across the same ground. To the east, the land opens flat toward Boston and the Wash. The feeling is less of arrival than of pivot.
Grantham is not simply a commuter stop between London and the north. North of the station, the network branches: one line runs east through Sleaford and Boston to Skegness — the Poacher Line — while another heads west to Nottingham. That branching turns Grantham into the point where coastal Lincolnshire, the inland East Midlands, and the national ECML spine all meet. Alongside it, the A1 does much the same work for road traffic. Two of post-medieval England's great south-north freight corridors converge here within a few hundred metres of each other.
Which raises a practical question: does that convergence actually matter to the region's food economy — one of the most concentrated in Britain — and if so, how?
What the branch lines actually connect
The two branch lines that diverge north of Grantham point in very different directions — geographically and economically.
Eastward, the Poacher Line runs 55 miles through Sleaford and Boston to Skegness, passing through the flatlands of South Lincolnshire at almost every stop. This is productive agricultural land: bulb fields, vegetable plots, and the processing sites that turn raw harvest into packed supermarket goods. The communities the line threads — Sleaford, Heckington, Hubberts Bridge, Boston — are embedded in that food economy in ways that shape local employment and daily movement. For a worker travelling from Boston to a processing facility near Sleaford, Grantham is simply the line's ECML junction, noticed mainly when someone wants a fast train south.
Westward, the branch to Nottingham connects to a different economy: urban, manufacturing-adjacent, part of the East Midlands industrial corridor. It is a shorter journey but crosses a sharper boundary — from the agricultural lowlands of Lincolnshire into denser employment centres with different industry profiles.
Grantham therefore functions as the point where these two economic geographies touch the national network simultaneously. That matters clearly for passengers and commuters, who gain direct ECML access without travelling to Peterborough or Newark. For freight — especially the cold-chain logistics that define the region's food industry — the picture is considerably less straightforward, for reasons that have more to do with the ECML's own limitations than with Grantham's position on it.
The freight the ECML cannot carry
The reason is structural. The ECML carries some of the densest intercity passenger timetabling in Britain, and the line's two best-known pinch points — the Newark flat crossing, where rail meets road at grade, and the Welwyn bottleneck south of Hertfordshire — restrict the total number of train paths available. Slotting slow, heavy freight trains onto a line reserved for services running at 125 mph is not simply inconvenient; on a line with that little spare capacity, it is largely impractical. The Office of Rail and Road must arbitrate between competing claims on the available paths, and passenger demand — recovering past pre-pandemic levels — tends to win.
Food freight, particularly the temperature-controlled containers that carry fresh produce from Lincolnshire's processing sites to supermarket distribution centres, takes a different route entirely. The Great Northern and Great Eastern Joint Line — the GNGE — runs roughly parallel to the ECML but threads directly through the food production heartland: south from Doncaster, through Lincoln and Spalding, down to Peterborough. That geography is not coincidental. Spalding is the centre of a logistics cluster that dispatches more than 1,000 lorry loads of food per day; the GNGE passes its door.
The public investment directed at this corridor reflects its role. A £270 million upgrade programme has targeted the GNGE specifically, including the Werrington Grade Separation north of Peterborough — an engineering fix that allows freight trains to cross the ECML without interrupting fast passenger services. Gauge clearance works are raising the line to W9/W10 standard, enabling intermodal containers carrying refrigerated goods to run at scale.
The systems logic here runs backwards from what you might expect. The ECML shapes Lincolnshire's food supply chain not by carrying the freight but by being unable to. Its passenger-priority constraints push food logistics onto a parallel corridor that runs straight through the fields and factories the fast line bypasses. The line that feeds London does so, in part, by staying out of the way.
The scale of what's moving
Numbers help here, but only when the right ones are chosen. Greater Lincolnshire produces one-eighth of England's food — a share that sounds improbable for a county most people could not confidently place on a map. Behind that figure are approximately 75,000 jobs across the food chain, from field to factory gate, representing 18% of all local employment at a time when the national average sits at 4%.
That gap is significant, but the South Holland District makes it stark. Centred on Spalding, South Holland's economy is 42% food — not as a sectoral curiosity but as the basic social fact of the place. In a working community where nearly half the workforce earns its living somewhere in the food supply chain, the resilience of that chain is not an abstract policy concern. It is the local labour market, the school leaver's first employer, the reason the cold-storage units and processing facilities line the roads out of town. Some 30% of all UK national food freight moves through South Lincolnshire, and the infrastructure decisions made about this corridor carry consequences for people in very direct and immediate ways.
The region's footprint extends well beyond growing and packing. Over 90 major food businesses operate across Greater Lincolnshire, and the area hosts what is formally recognised as Europe's largest agri-food automation and robotics cluster. The National Centre for Food Manufacturing anchors technical training and applied research that positions the county as somewhere the future of food processing is being actively worked out — not simply a place where produce is washed and boxed before boarding a lorry. That is the weight the logistics network along this corridor must bear.
Why road still dominates
The honest answer to why road dominates begins not with infrastructure but with produce. Fresh vegetables harvested in the fens on a Tuesday morning need to reach a distribution centre by Wednesday — a timetable that leaves no room for aggregation at a rail terminal, transfer to a container, and delivery to a railhead. Cold-chain logistics for fresh produce runs on hours, not days, and Lincolnshire's processing sites are geographically dispersed across fenland rather than clustered at fixed points. A packing facility outside Holbeach or a brassica processor near Boston needs a vehicle at its loading dock, not a scheduled rail service that requires loads to be consolidated first.
That dispersal is the structural explanation for what the numbers confirm. Over 75% of local road freight is food-chain related, and the A1 and A17 carry the dominant burden — connecting South Holland's processing cluster to supermarket distribution centres across England and into Europe. The daily outflow of more than 1,000 lorry loads from Spalding reflects not road being cheaper in the abstract, but fresh produce requiring point-to-point speed and flexibility that rail cannot routinely deliver to scattered sites across flat fenland.
The Poacher Line through Grantham is not part of this picture. Its value is passenger and worker connectivity — linking Boston, Sleaford, and the communities between to the ECML junction at Grantham. No documented food freight function attaches to it.
No consolidated public figures document rail's modal share in Lincolnshire food logistics; the aggregate volumes moved by rail versus road through this corridor are not reported by any of the relevant planning or transport authorities. What exists instead is the GNGE upgrade programme — and infrastructure spend at that scale, targeted specifically at gauge clearances and grade separation for intermodal containers, is the clearest available signal that policy is trying to shift the balance. At what pace that investment is translating into volumes transferred from road to rail, the public record does not yet show.
What the logistics map means for people here
In the early 1960s, Grantham's freight yards handled Class C trains — fully vacuum-braked, cleared to run faster than ordinary goods workings — because perishable produce demanded speed. The commercial imperative has not changed. What has changed is the scale: automated processing lines, temperature-controlled container fleets, and the distribution mathematics of national supermarket chains now sit behind every lorry load that leaves South Lincolnshire before dawn.
That historical continuity has a point. The friction between rail capacity and fresh-food logistics is not a policy problem that arrived recently. It has been working itself out at this junction, in different forms, for the better part of a century.
The stakes of how it resolves are direct. In a district where food employment runs to nearly half the local workforce, logistics infrastructure is not background infrastructure — it is the framework within which those jobs exist and evolve. Rail-based distribution and road-based distribution are not interchangeable: they favour different locations, require different skills, and generate different pressures on the land and roads around processing towns. If GNGE upgrades do shift meaningful volumes from road to rail, the employment geography of South Lincolnshire logistics changes with them — not dramatically, not overnight, but in ways that accumulate.
This is what large infrastructure decisions tend to do: they settle quietly into the economic structure of a place until their consequences are too embedded to unpick. For communities whose working identity is organised around moving food — and South Lincolnshire's is, more than anywhere else in England — the question of which corridor carries the load, and under what conditions, is ultimately a question about whose jobs are where, and what kind of resilience the region actually has. National decisions on rail investment, freight path allocation, and cold-chain capacity will shape that answer. The communities most affected are rarely in the room when those decisions are made.
