A market town the Luftwaffe deemed worth bombing

Nearly 400 air raid alerts sounded over Grantham during the Second World War. That figure is not a measure of bad luck or geography — it is an involuntary audit of the town's strategic value. The Luftwaffe does not repeatedly task aircraft toward a quiet Lincolnshire market town unless there is something worth destroying.

So what was Grantham actually doing? The short answer involves three things operating at once: factories turning out tanks, armoured carriers, and aircraft cannon; a road, canal, and rail network moving finished weapons toward the front; and, in a Georgian hall on the edge of town, a Royal Air Force group headquarters directing some of the war's most consequential bombing campaigns. Grantham was not a single cog in the war machine — it was simultaneously a production node, a logistics hub, and a directing intelligence.

That identity sits awkwardly beside the town's better-known footnotes — an A1 services stop, the birthplace of a prime minister. The wartime record suggests something with considerably more industrial consequence, and understanding it means following the engineering heritage back well before 1939.

The engineering foundations Hornsby built before 1914

Richard Hornsby & Sons had been operating on the Spittlegate site since 1828, and by the 1890s it was not a local curiosity but a substantial exporter. Around 2,000 people worked there making steam and oil engines — machinery that left Grantham for markets across the world. That scale of precision manufacturing is the starting point for understanding how the town mobilised so readily when war came: there was no need to build capacity from scratch.

The sharpest illustration of what Hornsby was capable of before 1914 came in 1904, when the company's managing director, David Roberts, patented a new form of crawler track. The War Office tested a prototype in 1907, placed an order, and by 10 May 1910 had taken delivery of four tracked vehicles — the first to enter formal British Army service. Soldiers watching the machine travel across the ground reportedly coined the word 'caterpillar', a name later adopted by the American firm Holt & Co., to which Hornsby sold the patent; Holt would eventually become Caterpillar Inc.

The honest qualification here matters: the 'Little Caterpillar', as it was known, did not directly evolve into the First World War tank. The conceptual and mechanical lineage is indirect. What it did demonstrate was that Grantham's engineers were already solving problems of tracked propulsion a decade before the conflict began — producing an idea significant enough for the War Office to trial, purchase, and ultimately see reappear, in other hands, across the Western Front.

WWI: the Admiralty moves in and the RFC moves next door

When war was declared in 1914, the decision about Grantham's largest factory was straightforward: the Admiralty moved in and took over the Hornsby works at Spittlegate outright, redirecting the plant's manufacturing capacity entirely to military production. What exactly it produced — and in what quantities — is where the record thins. Precise munitions tonnages from the Admiralty period have not been fully documented, and the scale of output, though clearly significant, remains a known gap in the evidence.

Two miles to the south-east, on ground that would later become RAF Spitalgate, the Royal Flying Corps established a training station — RFC Grantham — producing pilots for the emerging air war. The two sites had no formal connection, but together they placed the town simultaneously inside the ground-equipment supply chain and the nascent aviation infrastructure. The factory was making for the land battle; the aerodrome was staffing the air one.

That duality, largely unplanned, would set a pattern. By the time the armistice came in November 1918, Grantham had spent four years operating at the intersection of two distinct industrial logics — and the factories and land it left behind would be reorganised, not abandoned, as the town prepared for whatever came next.

WWII output: tanks, Bren carriers, and aircraft cannon

Three factories, three distinct products — and together, a production weight that explains why the Luftwaffe kept coming back.

Ruston & Hornsby, the firm that emerged from the 1918 merger of the Hornsby works with Ruston & Proctor of Lincoln, built Matilda II infantry tanks at the Grantham site throughout the war. The Matilda was the only British tank to remain in service for the entire conflict, and Grantham's share of production is estimated at around 400 units — roughly 13 per cent of the 2,987 built in total, based on available synthesis rather than a verified primary count. On that qualification noted, the order of magnitude is consistent with the scale of the Grantham plant.

On the Spittlegate ground now occupied by Aveling-Barford, the monthly output was 47 Bren gun carriers — armoured vehicles that accompanied infantry in every theatre the British Army fought across. King George VI visited the plant in 1940 to inspect production, a detail that speaks both to the scale of what was being made and to the political visibility of Grantham's output at the point when the war's outcome was still far from determined.

The third firm was BMARC — British Manufacture and Research Company — whose 60-acre shadow factory on Springfield Road produced Hispano-Suiza 20mm aircraft cannon: the weapon fitted to Spitfires and Hurricanes that gave RAF Fighter Command its principal forward firepower. Precise production totals for the Springfield Road site have not been established in surviving records, but the factory's footprint and its customers leave little ambiguity about its weight in the wider supply chain.

St Vincent's Hall and the direction of Bomber Command

Production was only part of what Grantham contributed. From October 1937, St Vincent's Hall in the town centre served as the headquarters of No. 5 Group RAF Bomber Command — a role it held until November 1943. From that address, the Group directed 70,357 sorties, oversaw the operational introduction of the Avro Lancaster, and authorised the Dambusters raid by No. 617 Squadron in May 1943.

The choice of Grantham was not arbitrary. A town already embedded in military supply chains, with rail connections directly onto the East Coast Main Line and proximity to the South Lincolnshire airfields from which the Group's bombers flew, offered practical advantages that a larger city might not. Strategic command followed the infrastructure that already existed.

What that combination meant in practice was unusual for a town of Grantham's size: simultaneously, the same streets contained factories making tanks and cannon for the ground and air battles, and a headquarters directing the strategic bombing campaign that would shape the war's outcome. Few non-capital cities held both roles at once — and Grantham held them not through accident, but because decades of precision engineering had made the town's capacity hard to ignore.

What that engineering heritage means for Grantham today

The canals, rail lines, and roads that fed Grantham's wartime factories were not built for the wars. The Grantham Canal opened in 1797, the Great Northern Railway arrived in 1852, and the town's position on the A1 and East Coast Main Line was already established long before either conflict began. That infrastructure survived both wars intact — an unglamorous but significant fact, since it meant the transition back to civilian production faced fewer structural obstacles than in towns where bombing had been heavier.

What followed was diversification rather than simple continuity. Post-war Grantham made water pumps, cranes, crankshafts, coal cutters, and road rollers alongside residual armaments work. Aveling-Barford, which had churned out Bren carriers through the 1940s, became internationally known for heavy construction equipment — motorgraders, dump trucks, site dumpers — before closing in 1988. That closure is part of the story and deserves to be named as such: the engineering tradition did not insulate the town from the deindustrialisation that reshaped much of the English Midlands.

Today, South Kesteven district is described — largely in local authority framing rather than through independent industrial analysis — as a hub for precision CNC machining, robotics, and bulk materials handling. GLEAM-SK, the Grantham and Lincoln Engineering and Manufacturing network, supports apprenticeships and sector visibility, consciously referencing the town's engineering identity. Whether that framing reflects deep industrial continuity or aspirational positioning is a question the evidence does not yet settle. What it does offer is a usable past: a specific, documented record of adaptive manufacturing capacity that is more honest — and more interesting — than any generic innovation narrative.
