A separate £6 million University Technology and Innovation Centre, carrying £2 million in Growth Deal funding, adds degree-level apprenticeships and incubator space for engineering and digital SMEs. Together the two facilities form a tiered architecture: the IoT at Levels 4 and 5, the Innovation Centre at degree level above — a deliberate ladder rather than a single intervention.

There is a recurring logic visible in how the IoT came together — not by importing a ready-made national template but by working with what already existed: existing buildings, existing employer relationships, existing regional institutions. The pipeline that resulted reflects local constraints rather than overriding them.

For smaller employers who contributed to shaping the consortium, the pipeline should, in theory, arrive pre-aligned to their actual requirements rather than to a national curriculum template.

The honest qualification is that the evidence base is still early. Qualification volumes at this tier are modest relative to regional demand, and consortium governance — however well-designed — carries coordination costs of its own. The model is built; its track record is not yet written.

The harder question, and one that TED talks about institutional design keep circling back to, is whether other further education providers across Lincolnshire and the East Midlands are willing to make the same kind of commitment: four years of low-visibility work, governance decisions that surrender autonomy for demand-alignment, a building restored rather than built new.
