
A 66% employment rate and what TED talks tend to skip
Sixty-six point two per cent. That is South Kesteven's employment rate for the year ending December 2023, according to the ONS — nearly ten percentage points below the East Midlands average of 75.5%, and representing a fall of roughly 8,400 jobs in the district year-on-year. It is a structural shortfall, not a recessionary blip, and it sits awkwardly alongside the kind of future-of-work optimism that fills TED talk stages.
TED has published more than 7,000 main-stage talks, many of them addressing automation, remote work, and digital opportunity. TEDx Grantham — part of that same ecosystem, built around the theme 'Rethink' — exists to ask whether those ideas survive contact with a place like this one. The programme's premise is that ideas worth spreading can emerge from non-metropolitan environments, including historically industrial towns in the East Midlands. This article takes that premise seriously and puts it to work on one specific question: what does the mainstream future-of-work narrative miss when it arrives in Lincolnshire?
The answer is not simply that Lincolnshire is poorer or smaller. The gap is different in kind. TED talks tend to address workers who already have broadband, mobility, and transferable digital credentials. Lincolnshire's labour market challenge begins well before any of those assumptions hold.
The TED talk argument: automation creates, not just destroys
David Autor's TED talk — 'Will automation take away all our jobs?' — is probably the most cited piece of economic optimism on the subject. Its central claim is a historical one: over 125 years, mechanisation has not reduced the overall proportion of adults in work. Machines have repeatedly eliminated specific tasks while simultaneously creating new categories of employment that did not previously exist. The telegraph displaced some workers and created telegraph operators; the spreadsheet made bookkeepers redundant and generated demand for financial analysts. Net employment grew throughout.
The argument Autor makes is not that disruption is painless — he is clear that individual workers and communities bear real costs during transitions. Rather, it is that automation tends to complement human labour at the aggregate level, raising productivity and generating new roles that only people can fill. The implication for policy is broadly hopeful: if societies invest in retraining, workers displaced by one wave of technology can move into the roles the same wave creates.
This is a serious, evidence-grounded framework, and it deserves to be taken seriously rather than dismissed as naive. The 125-year record is real. The complementarity mechanism is well-documented in economic research.
But Autor's optimism carries a conditional that often gets lost in the headline version of the argument: it assumes that displaced workers can actually access the retraining required, and that the new roles created are geographically and practically reachable from where those workers live. That assumption is where the argument meets Lincolnshire — and where the friction begins.
Where the retraining assumption breaks in practice
South Kesteven's version of that friction has a name — or rather, several names. Autocraft, BGB, and Winfield Engineering are among the precision and specialist manufacturers anchored in the district, and the skills they require are not generalist ones. Advanced fabrication, industrial turbomachinery, complex electronics integration: these are disciplines that demand years of vocational formation, not a twelve-week online upskilling course. Research into the local industrial base finds that their technical demands 'cannot be met by traditional, generalized secondary education alone', reflecting what it describes as a 'historical national misalignment between academic output and industrial requirements'.
This matters because Autor's retraining mechanism is not automatic. For complementarity to function — for the new roles that automation creates to actually be filled by workers from displaced or excluded cohorts — several things must be true simultaneously. Employers must be actively involved in defining what training looks like. Vocational pathways at the right level must exist locally. And the geography must be workable: a high-value engineering role in Grantham cannot be filled by someone in a nearby village who cannot reach it.
None of those conditions arrive as a consequence of automation itself. They require deliberate construction. The structural nature of South Kesteven's skills gap — a district-level mismatch between what local employers need and what local education has historically produced — is not a measure of individual ambition. It is evidence that a nationally optimistic trend does not distribute its benefits evenly across rural labour markets.
The place-based answer: employer-led training in Lincolnshire
The deliberate construction that section three describes has a concrete local form: the Lincolnshire Institute of Technology, known as LIoT. Led by the University of Lincoln and anchored in Grantham through the College's conversion of the grade II-listed Stonebridge House into an engineering and digital skills hub, LIoT is not a generic upskilling initiative. Its founding partners include Bakkavor, Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery, and Olympus Automation — employers with specific technical needs, based in the region, recruiting from it.
That specificity is precisely the point. The Level 4 qualifications LIoT offers in cyber security, data analytics, and software engineering are shaped around what those named employers actually recruit for, with starter salaries from £27,000. This is the mechanism Autor's complementarity thesis requires — retrain into the new roles — but functioning only because it is rooted in a particular place, particular industries, and particular institutional relationships. Strip out any one of those elements and the pipeline collapses.
Remote access to digital jobs based elsewhere does not replicate this. A worker in South Kesteven gaining an online certificate aimed at London's tech sector faces an entirely different set of barriers: geography, transport, professional networks, and the simple fact that the region's anchor employers are here, not there. LIoT is producing skills for firms already present in Lincolnshire. The model is replicable in principle, but only where anchor employers are physically present to anchor it.
Why remote work compounds the problem rather than solving it
Remote work is sometimes framed as a structural fix for rural employment gaps: if the jobs are elsewhere, bring the jobs to the workers via broadband. In Greater Lincolnshire, three interlocking realities make this much harder than it sounds.
The first is transport poverty. Greater Lincolnshire's rural geography — vast tracts between scattered market towns — means that many residents cannot reliably reach employment centres, healthcare, or education. Fixed-route bus services are frequently unviable at the population densities involved. Before any question of broadband quality or laptop access arises, transport exclusion already limits who can participate in economic life. Digital exclusion and transport exclusion compound rather than substitute for each other.
The second mechanism is the risk of a two-tiered economy. As public services and employers pivot to digital-first models, the tendency — not yet a precisely measured local outcome, but well-grounded as a structural risk — is for technological dividends to concentrate among external specialists who can access them, rather than among the rural residents the transition is meant to serve. Without deliberate local skill-building, remote-enabled work may deepen inequality rather than spread it.
The third is perhaps the most concrete. Lincolnshire's fastest-growing rural tech sector — agri-tech automation — is irreducibly on-site. JABAS.AI's GPS-free autonomous fleets, designed to take over the heavy lifting that previously consumed twenty per cent of a fruit picker's energy and caused chronic joint damage, create new high-value rural tech roles. SAGA Robotics' UV-C Thorvald robot operates in the same physical fields. These are not roles that can be performed remotely from a city. The future of work in this part of Lincolnshire is place-based by design — automation deployed to protect workers on the land, not to route employment away from it.
Social cohesion, physical work, and what Grantham is actually building
Margaret Heffernan's TED talk, 'Forget the Pecking Order at Work', arrives at a finding that cuts against much of the remote-flexibility orthodoxy: it is everyday social cohesion — built in coffee breaks, in asking a colleague for help, in shared physical presence — that drives high-achieving teams, not the concentration of star performers or the removal of geographical friction. 'Companies don't have ideas,' she argues. 'Only people do.' And people, her research suggests, do their best work when they are genuinely connected to each other.
The Grantham Canal project illustrates this in material terms. Rebuilding Lock 14 entirely by hand was not an exercise in nostalgia. The process transferred highly specialised traditional construction skills to a younger, more diverse group of people through direct physical participation — skills that cannot be conveyed through an online module or absorbed remotely. The work was the learning, and the learning was inseparable from the place.
That is the pattern TEDxGrantham's 'Rethink' theme is pointing at: that systems-level thinking about the future of work does not require a metropolitan stage. Non-metropolitan, historically industrial environments are already generating the models — employer-rooted training pipelines, on-site agri-tech roles, heritage skills transferred hand to hand — that the placeless digital narrative has no category for. In Grantham and the wider South Kesteven area, this is not aspiration. It is already under construction.
