Walk down Brook Street on a Saturday morning in Grantham — a Lincolnshire market town of around 44,000 people — and nothing much announces itself. Shoppers move between the market and the car parks; the street does what ordinary streets do. TED talks return often to the theme of curiosity, and TEDx Grantham is part of that same conversation, but the town's most striking answer to the question of where curiosity leads sits quietly on this very street: The King's School, whose roots trace to 1329 and whose oldest buildings date to 1497, was where Isaac Newton spent his school years before he remade optics, calculus, and classical mechanics. The connection between the talk format and the town is not decorative — Newton's time here is one of the more striking examples of what can happen when an unfashionable question is followed with patience. From the pavement, nothing signals any of this. That gap between appearance and significance is where this article begins.

What The King's School actually gave Newton

The school Newton entered — probably around 1655, when he was roughly twelve — was not an elite institution in any modern sense. The King's School had been re-endowed by Richard Foxe in 1528 as a grammar school serving the sons of local tradespeople and yeoman families, precisely the stock from which Newton's mother, Hannah Ayscough, came. His attendance here was not an escape to somewhere grander; it was entirely of a piece with his Lincolnshire origins.

His path through the school was not straightforward. For a period he was pulled back to the family farm at Woolsthorpe to work the land. It was the schoolmaster Henry Stokes who recognised what was being wasted and made the case for Newton's return — a small act of institutional advocacy that preceded, by roughly thirty years, any of the science that would make his name. The Early Life of Isaac Newton (and Westfall's biography Never at Rest) documents this episode; it repays reading as local rather than national history.

During his Grantham years Newton lodged with an apothecary, William Clarke, on the High Street. Clarke's household was a working environment full of materials, preparations, and practical questions — an early context for hands-on curiosity that later found expression in Newton's windmill experiments: scaled models he built and observed, driven less by any obvious purpose than by the need to understand how a thing worked. None of this pointed obviously toward the Principia. It pointed toward someone unwilling to leave a question alone.

Why TED talks keep coming back to curiosity

TED's preoccupation with curiosity is not accidental. Ken Robinson's "Do Schools Kill Creativity?" — still among the most-watched talks in TED's history — argues that formal education has a systematic tendency to penalise divergent thinking, treating the wrong answer as failure rather than as a stage in understanding. Mario Livio's talk on why humans are curious at all takes a different angle, asking what drives a species to investigate things that offer no immediate survival benefit. Between them, these talks and others like them converge on a consistent set of claims: curiosity precedes discovery; it can be cultivated or extinguished by institutions; and the questions that feel least pressing in the moment are often the ones that prove most generative.

Psychologists offer a more precise vocabulary for what TED is circling. Intellectual curiosity — interest in the underlying mechanisms of systems, mathematical relationships, history, and social norms — is classified in the Five Factor Model as a facet of openness to experience, allied to what researchers call "need for cognition." The Berkeley Greater Good Science Center's definition strips the romanticism: curiosity is the desire to approach novel and challenging ideas specifically to increase one's knowledge. That is an orientation toward difficulty, not a mood.

There is also a social dimension. Curious people are reliably perceived in social encounters as more interesting and more engaging — a finding from the Berkeley Greater Good research that partly explains why TED's format, built around someone sharing what they genuinely want to understand, sustains an audience at all. Newton, viewed through this lens, was not an exceptional case but an illustration of the same disposition: someone who found questions more compelling than the discomfort of not yet having answers.

Newton's unfashionable questions

Newton's private papers reveal someone pursuing three simultaneous projects: the mathematics of motion, a systematic programme of alchemical experiment, and a theology that placed him outside Anglican orthodoxy. He was, by his own private conviction, an Arian — he did not believe in the Trinity — a position that, had it become public, would have barred him from academic life entirely. The alchemy was equally earnest: not mysticism but hands-on experiment, conducted across decades at Trinity College Cambridge and producing roughly a million words of notes.

Neither pursuit was respectable within the emerging culture of the Royal Society, whose founding in 1660 had implicitly separated natural philosophy from speculative theology and occult tradition. Newton ignored that separation — not defiantly, but because the questions interested him. He held his convictions quietly and continued regardless.

That disposition — pursuing a question without waiting for it to be socially validated — requires something other than confidence. Newton's theological notes show him correcting himself, returning to the same passages over years, acknowledging that he did not yet know. The philosophical tradition has long identified precisely this willingness to sit with acknowledged ignorance as the engine of genuine enquiry: recognising that one's knowledge has limits is what keeps a person looking rather than stopping. It is what intellectual humility looks like in practice rather than in definition.

TED talks on curiosity frequently observe that the most generative questions feel uncomfortable or premature when they are first asked. Newton is a pre-modern example of the same pattern. The alchemy was wrong, the theology was heterodox, and neither has been vindicated by history — but the willingness to ask without waiting for permission to ask is inseparable from the mathematics that was.

What curiosity actually requires: three conditions

Curiosity, as TED talks and the research both suggest, does not arrive fully formed. Three conditions appear to support it — and recognising them makes Newton's schooling, and the wider debate about education, easier to read.

The first is observation: the disposition to treat the ordinary as provisionally unexplained. Newton's years in Grantham, before Cambridge, were physically textured in ways an abstract curriculum might not have been; the materials of daily life in a seventeenth-century market town were there to be handled and examined. That kind of grounded, particular attention is what TED talks on curiosity consistently identify as the starting point — not wonder in the abstract, but noticing something specific.

The second is patience. A 2025 study tracking 870 language learners found that curiosity reliably predicted better academic outcomes and reduced anxiety — but the effect held only where curiosity was sustained rather than episodic. Enthusiasm that flares and fades produces restlessness; curiosity that persists produces understanding.

The third condition may be the most demanding: a tolerance for productive discomfort. A 2024 piece in Scientific American describes learning as flourishing in a sweet spot between challenge and frustration — too easy and attention drifts, too hard and it collapses entirely. This is arguably the condition formal schooling finds hardest to preserve. The King's School, whatever else it provided, gave Newton time: a genuinely scarce resource for a yeoman family's child in 1650s Lincolnshire, and perhaps the one that made the other two possible.

What Brook Street is still doing on a Saturday

Brook Street on a Saturday morning looks much as it always has: a grammar school building set into the fabric of a working market town, unremarked by most people passing it. That is not a failure of the building to communicate. It is closer to the normal condition of significant things.

TEDx Grantham sits in that same tradition — not because Grantham has a particular claim on curiosity, but because curiosity has never required a famous postcode. What the school on Brook Street makes concrete is the more uncomfortable version of that claim: the conditions for asking an unfashionable question were present here, in a Lincolnshire market town in the 1650s, for a boy from a yeoman family, inside an institution that looked, from the street, like nothing special. TED talks on curiosity return repeatedly to that same structural point — that the question precedes the validation, not the other way round.

The building has not been updated to signal any of this. Walk past it and you would not know. That is, on reflection, precisely the right advertisement for what happens inside it.
