
The blind spot in TED's engineering identity frame
TED talks have spent considerable energy asking who belongs in engineering — and rightly so. Talks circulating under titles such as 'Engineering a World Where Everyone Belongs' and Mohamed Kante's 'Engineering for Belonging' at TEDxRoxbury frame the question in terms of diversity, impostor syndrome, and the psychological conditions that make individuals feel included or excluded from the profession. For TEDx Grantham, sitting in a town that has been continuously employed in heavy engineering since at least 1810, that frame raises an uncomfortable question: what is it missing?
The gap is place. TED's vocabulary for engineering identity is almost entirely individual or demographic — who feels they belong, who is shut out, how teams can be redesigned to include more people. It has no ready language for what two centuries of concentrated industrial employment does to a geography, or to the people who grow up, train, and work inside it.
Grantham is an instructive test case. The article's question is a simple one: what does engineering identity look like when it is shaped by a specific town rather than by individual psychology alone?
What TED talks say about engineering identity
The talks that cluster around engineering identity on TED and TEDx platforms share a recognisable anatomy. 'How the Engineering Design Process Can Help Us Tackle Systemic Issues' argues that impostor syndrome is a systemic product, not a personal failing, and that inclusive team cultures can be built as deliberately as any physical structure. Mohamed Kante's 'Engineering for Belonging' at TEDxRoxbury treats belonging itself as a design problem — something an organisation can engineer intentionally, team by team. Both are well-argued, and the problems they address are genuine.
What neither contains is a postcode, a factory, or a generation. They are crafted to be useful to someone watching in Singapore as much as in South Kesteven — and that is simultaneously their strength and their limitation. The individual engineer is the unit of analysis: her psychology, her sense of belonging, her experience of inclusion or exclusion. The social environment that precedes her — the town that employed her parents, the apprenticeships her grandparents took, the industry that shaped the local grammar of work — is off the frame entirely.
This is a structural consequence of TED's format, not a flaw in intent. A fifteen-minute talk rewarded for universal resonance will default to the interior life of the individual engineer. Place, collective memory, and multi-generational occupational culture are harder to compress than a personal story with a turning point. The result is a body of work that is analytically honest about individual psychology and largely silent about industrial geography.
Grantham's 200-year engineering thread
Start with the canal. In 1797, William Jessop completed a 33-mile waterway connecting Grantham to the River Trent at Nottingham — the first canal in England fed entirely by artificial reservoirs rather than a natural river. The immediate effect was practical: coal arrived from Nottinghamshire at lower cost, and grain and malt moved out. The longer effect was structural. Cheaper fuel and reliable freight access made Grantham viable for energy-intensive industry at precisely the moment when iron foundries were beginning to define economic geography across the Midlands.
Richard Hornsby & Sons, founded around 1810 and incorporated under that name by 1828, became the firm around which the town's engineering identity organised itself. In 1892 its Grantham works produced the Hornsby–Akroyd oil engine — the world's first successful heavy-oil internal combustion engine and a direct forerunner of the diesel. Thirteen years later, Hornsby patented an early caterpillar track system for vehicles, later selling the patent to Holt & Co. in America for £4,000, a transaction that fed directly into the mechanical lineage of the military tank.
The scale this represented for a market town is visible in the census data. Grantham's population grew from 4,955 in 1801 to 16,457 in 1901 — a 230 per cent increase driven primarily by engineering employment. That density of industrial occupation is unusual: most comparable market towns retained a broader agricultural base. Grantham's was disproportionately foundry and factory.
The twentieth century sustained and diversified that concentration. Aveling-Barford, formed in 1934 on Hornsby's former Invicta Works site, commanded roughly 75 per cent of British road roller output by the late 1930s and employed more than 2,000 workers across a 70-acre complex. At BMARC's 60-acre Springfield Road factory, 46 per cent of the entire UK supply of Hispano 20mm cannons was produced by 1943, arming Spitfires and Hurricanes across the RAF. Aveling-Barford was later absorbed into British Leyland in 1967 and eventually closed — a contraction that reshaped the town's employment landscape, though it did not end manufacturing activity there.
What runs through the full list of Grantham's documented output — armaments, water pumps, cranes, crankshafts, coal cutters, road rollers — is not specialism but range. Engineers here were not trained into a single industry and stuck. They moved between defence production, agricultural machinery, civil engineering equipment, and construction plant, often within the same square mile. That breadth is the analytical point: it produced a shared occupational culture that was genuinely transferable, anchored not to one sector but to a place.
How place makes engineering identity differently
Place-identity research published in IJSET in 2025 gives a name to the mechanism: a location's specific history, culture, and values shape how residents engage with their environment and generate social belonging — not by conscious design, but through sustained, ambient exposure across time. When that exposure runs for more than 150 continuous years and concentrates in a single dominant industry, the shaping effect compounds across generations.
This is structurally different from what TED talks on engineering identity address. Those talks treat belonging as something an organisation can build or an individual can claim — a threshold to cross, a culture to construct. Place-identity describes belonging as something inherited before the individual arrives at any decision: ambient, collective, prior to choice. In a town where engineering was the economic grammar of daily life for successive generations living in the same streets and sharing the same employers, the second kind of identity formation is the more plausible frame — and the one that individual-centred psychology cannot easily reach.
The circumstantial case for Grantham is compelling — the GLEAM network firms, the apprenticeship pipelines at Grantham College, the unbroken company lineages all fit the pattern — though the causal claim remains inferential. No survey has yet measured whether residents trace their engineering self-concept to the town's industrial heritage rather than to more recent choices; the argument is theoretically grounded rather than ethnographically established. That limit is real, but it does not collapse the analytical distinction: inherited, ambient belonging and consciously constructed belonging are genuinely different phenomena, and only one of them regularly surfaces in engineering identity talks.
GLEAM, apprenticeships, and today's engineering firms
Evidence of continuity is not hard to find. The Greater Lincolnshire Engineering and Manufacturing Network — GLEAM — brought together seven Grantham-area firms for National Manufacturing Day in 2022, each opening its facilities to students: BGB, working in wind, wave, nuclear, and electric vehicle technology; Pentangle Engineering in robotics and automation; Iconic Engineering Solutions in motorsport precision CNC; Grantham Engineering Ltd, an electro-mechanical specialist for raw materials handling industries, founded in 1946 and still family-owned; alongside plastics moulding, signage, and utilities construction. The sectoral spread — nuclear energy, robotics, motorsport, heavy electro-mechanical systems — echoes the same generalist breadth that characterised the town's earlier output. This is not a single ageing industry hanging on; it is the same disposition toward varied heavy engineering, reproduced in contemporary form.
The apprenticeship picture makes the connection between past and present unusually explicit. Grantham College runs Level 2 to Level 5 engineering apprenticeships, and the stated rationale for doing so is a skills gap caused by an ageing post-war manufacturing workforce nearing retirement. That framing is significant: the training need is described as a structural inheritance, not a fresh market signal.
Corporate lineage points in the same direction. One thread traces from the Hornsby foundry of around 1810, through the Ruston & Hornsby merger of 1918, to Siemens and MAN Energy Solutions today. Grantham Engineering Ltd, on Harlaxton Road, represents a shorter but equally unbroken line: founded in 1946, it continues to design, manufacture, and repair electro-mechanical systems for international industries. Neither thread is the whole story, but both are verifiable — and neither belongs only to the past.
What TED's frame and Grantham's model can offer each other
The argument runs in both directions — which the section title implies but is worth making explicit.
TED's analytical vocabulary has genuine value here: the idea that belonging must be intentionally designed, that inclusion is an engineering problem rather than a demographic accident, is directly useful to institutions like GLEAM and Grantham College. Those networks are already building the pipelines; what TED's framing adds is a sharper language for describing and defending that work to funders, policymakers, and prospective apprentices who may not yet see a Grantham robotics firm or an electro-mechanical specialist as continuations of something older and worth sustaining.
What Grantham returns to that conversation is the missing variable: place. The analytical seriousness TED brings to individual and organisational belonging has not yet been turned on regional industrial heritage as a formative force. A 200-year thread of concentrated engineering employment is not nostalgia — it is infrastructure of a different kind, one that shapes occupational culture before any training programme begins.
For readers across South Kesteven and Lincolnshire, the question is concrete rather than rhetorical: what engineering heritage does your town carry, and through what institutions is it being transmitted rather than quietly lost? Sleaford, Stamford, and Spalding each have distinct industrial histories; some have active apprenticeship pipelines and some do not. The practical difference between heritage as ornament and heritage as active resource lies in whether it connects to the present — through firms, colleges, and networks that treat it as more than a commemorative trail.
TED's frame can name the mechanism. The place has to supply the evidence.
